Officer Involved Shooting

On July 24th, 2015 at about 6:36 pm Kern County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Standard Park in Oildale for a report of a suicidal subject.

When deputies arrived they contacted a 16 year old female at the east end of the park. The female juvenile was holding a cellular phone and when deputies first tried to talk to her she began walking westbound through the park. Deputies followed her through the park to an area near the basketball courts. As the deputies continued to try to talk to her she placed the phone in a pocket and removed what appeared to be a handgun.

Deputies repeatedly ordered her to drop the handgun, however she refused. At one point she pointed the handgun at the deputies and all three deputies discharged their firearms at her. The deputies fired a total of four rounds, striking her once in the abdomen. She was then taken into custody.

Deputies began rendering medical aid. An ambulance, which had been standing by in the area at the deputies’ request, responded immediately. The juvenile was treated by ambulance personnel and transported to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Detectives responded and initiated an investigation into the shooting. The investigation is ongoing. It was later determined the handgun was a realistic looking Daisy Power Line Model 45 pellet gun.

The three deputies who discharged their firearms are identified as 9 year veteran Scott Wall, 7 year veteran Daniel Willis, and 7 year veteran Dennis Coffee. All three have been place on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.

The juvenile was arrested for exhibiting a firearm at a peace officer and obstructing or delaying a peace officer. She will be booked into Juvenile Hall when she is released from KMC.

A photo of the replica firearm is attached.
