Aviation - 40King3 and Air Rescue 306 respond to Devils Backbone in Mt. Baldy to assist in a request for medical aid

DATE/TIME: July 25, 2015/9:40 a.m.

INCIDENT: Request Medical Aid

LOCATION: Devils Backbone- Mt. Baldy Area

VICTIM(S): 50 year old Male

SUMMARY:
On Saturday, July 25, 2015, at approximately 9:40 a.m., Sheriff's Aviation Division 40King3 and Air Rescue 306 were requested to assist deputies and San Bernardino CountyFire reference a medical aid along the Devils Backbone Trail, just west of the Mt. Baldy Ski Lodge. Initial reports were that a male subject was suffering from an apparent heart attack, and bystanders were performing CPR.
Upon arriving on scene, 40King3 located the victim and the group he was with. The pilot of 40King3 was able to land nearby and the EMT/Flight Officer was off-loaded in order to make contact with the victim. Upon making contact, it was learned that the victim, a 50 year old male, was hiking the trail with friends and family. During the hike, he complained of feeling light-headed and dizzy, then fell to the ground. According to witnesses, the male was not breathing and had no pulse.
Several good samaritans stopped along the trail to assist the victim. These good samaritans immediately began CPR and called for help. Within minutes, Ski Patrol from the Mt. Baldy Lodge responded to the area with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) which was used unsuccessfully. The victim, with help from the good samaritans and Mt. Baldy Fire, was then loaded onto a backboard and driven ¼ mile to AR306, who had just landed at the Mt. Baldy Ski Lodge.
Once at the ski lodge, the victim was loaded into AR306 and flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC). During the flight to ARMC, the medical crew of AR306, which consisted of a registered nurse and 2 EMT’s continued CPR and Advanced Life Support (ALS) measures. Once at ARMC, the victim was transferred to the care of hospital staff. The victim was pronounced deceased upon arrival to the hospital.
