CIVIL GRAND JURY RATES SIGNAL HILL POLICE DEPARTMENT DETENTION FACILITY “OUTSTANDING”

The Final Report of the 2014-2015 County of Los Angeles Civil Grand Jury gave the City of Signal Hill Police Department Detention Facility an “Outstanding” rating. Inspecting local detention facilities is a mandate of the Civil Grand Jury that is conducted annually. The report further noted the facility which was inspected on September 26, 2014 was part of a fairly new station and that the State-of-the-Art Station was clean and the Staff was courteous and polite.

Local detention facilities are built to the latest corrections and building standards in effect at the time the building is approved for construction. Chief Michael S. Langston said, “Opened in January 2013, this is probably one of the newest police and detention facilities built in Los Angeles County.” “The decision to build and fund this facility was part of the City Council’s commitment to public safety within the City of Signal Hill and to ensuring that we operate a safe and constitutional detention facility, even one used for temporary holding purposes as this one is,” said the Chief.

In addition to inspection by the Civil Grand Jury, local detention facilities are regularly inspected by the Board of Community Corrections which establishes minimum standards for local adult and juvenile detention facilities, County Health Department which inspects facilities and sets food standards, and the local fire department which conducts an annual fire safety inspection.
