Razor Blades Found at Harvest Park in Chula Vista

On 7/22/15 at 3:35 pm Chula Vista Police took a report of razor blades found in the grass at Harvest Park, 1150 E. Palomar Street in Chula Vista. Harvest Park is a large grass area in the middle of a residential community, commonly used for youth sports activities.
A citizen was using the park to run football drills with his two sons when he found the blades. He located about 12 blades. According to the witness some of blades appeared to have been placed blade-up in the grass. Some had been cut into pieces, consistent with having been hit with a lawn mower (the park had been mowed by Chula Vista Parks and Rec personnel that morning, 7/22/15). The blades were found by the citizen in an area of about a 30’ radius.
The citizen called police who responded to take a police report and search for more blades. Officers expanded their search, going out to about a 100’ radius, and found an additional 8 whole blades and 2 broken blades. Police notified supervisors from Parks and Rec who closed the park and began a detailed search of the rest of the park using magnets and/or metal detectors. The next day, 7/23/15 Parks and Rec personnel found over a dozen more broken pieces of razor blades strewn about a very large area. The park will remain closed today while they complete the thorough search of the rest of the park.
Although this appears to be an isolated incident, Parks and Rec personnel are checking other parks throughout the city for razor blades.
The Crimes of Violence unit is investigating this as a felony crime with charges ranging from child endangerment, setting up a “booby trap” (20110 PC), possession of a deadly weapon, to assault with a deadly weapon (should someone get hurt). There have been no reports of injuries.
