City of Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist Appoints Chief of Police
Effective July 22, 2015, Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist and has named the Interim Jackson Police Chief Julian Wiser as the city of Jackson Chief of Police. Chief Wiser was officially sworn-in
by Judge Blake Anderson on the morning of July 22, 2015.
Chief Wiser, who has been with the Jackson Police Department for 19 years, has effectively served as Interim Police Chief since October 2014. Wiser was the first supervisor of the newly formed Street Crimes Unit in 2008, while he continued to serve as the sergeant in charge of the Gang Enforcement Team and Canine Unit. Wiser was later promoted to lieutenant of the Gang Unit and Canine Unit along with serving on the U.S. Marshal Task Force. In 2013, Wiser was promoted to Captain and Division Commander of the Special Operations Division (Gang Unit, Canine Unit, Metro Narcotics, Aviation Unit, Tactical Unit and Bomb Unit). He is a veteran of the U.S. Marines and has served as a Federal Task Force Officer with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
Mayor Jerry Gist states, “Naming Interim Police Chief Julian Wiser as the city of Jackson Chief of Police continues the effort to intervene and take Jackson beyond the type of issues that cities across our nation are facing. Chief Wiser has good discernment in his leadership, an informed focus on fighting crime, and an engaging kindness to establish good relationships with the people of Jackson. He has demonstrated his ability to continue Blue Impact initiatives for crime reduction while also recognizing the value and contributions of each member of the police force.”
