Spike in Theft of Catalytic Converters from vehicles parked at residences

The Newark Police Department has noticed a recent spike in the theft of catalytic converters from Toyota trucks and SUV’s specifically the Sequoia and 4-Runner models. The thefts occurred overnight on July 7-8, 2015 in residential neighborhoods throughout Newark. The unknown suspects cut the exhaust pipes, removing the catalytic converters from 9 separate vehicles.

NPD has been alerted to similar thefts in Danville, Walnut Creek, and Brentwood. Thieves are suspected of cutting the catalytic converters from the vehicles as they are parked in residential driveways or parked in front of residences. We believe the thefts are related to the value of the metals inside the catalytic converters.

We recommend owners of the Toyota Sequoias and 4-Runners to park their vehicles in garages, side yards, or well-lit areas. We are asking residents to be vigilant in protecting each other’s property. If you are unable to secure your vehicle indoors, we suggest installing security cameras, or motion sensing lights to reduce the likelihood of thefts from your property.

If you have any information regarding the theft of catalytic converters from vehicles in Newark, please call Sergeant David Lee at 510-578-4939.
