Rush County Man Arrested for Battery on an Infant

On June 8th Pendleton District Detective Tom Schwendenman began an investigation into an infant that was injured while staying with his father in Charlottesville, in rural Rush County.  The one month old had been transferred to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis after initially being seen at Hancock Regional Health in Greenfield with head and chest injuries.

On July 1st that investigation culminated in the arrest of the infant’s father on four felony charges.  William Hurd, age 36, was arrested in the Marsh parking lot in Pendleton around 10 p.m. on July 1st and charged with Level 3 Felony Battery resulting in Serious Bodily Injury to someone under the age of 14, and Level 3 Felony Neglect of a Dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.

In addition Hurd was charged with Level 5 Felony Battery on a person under the age of 14, and Level 5 Felony Neglect of a Dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. Hurd was lodged in the Rush County Jail. Detective Schwendenman said “according to doctor’s reports, the infant is expected to make a full recovery from its injuries.”  Detective Schwendenman was assisted in his investigation by Trooper Scott McPheeters.

All Suspects Are Presumed Innocent Until Proven Guilty in a Court of Law
