Today, just after 10:00 AM, OPD officers responded to the 3700 block of 13th Avenue to assist an Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) police officer on a report of a man asleep in a car with what appeared to be a gun on the front passenger seat.
OPD and OUSD coordinated to lock down the Edna Brewer Middle School and relocated the children, who are in summer session, to a safe location on the school grounds. Officers established a perimeter around the area. Using a PA system, they gave verbal directions and commands to the occupant of the vehicle. The individual sat up, complied with the directions of the officers, exited the vehicle, and was safely taken into custody. Officers recovered a small silver lighter in the shape of a handgun from the right front passenger seat when they searched the vehicle.
Police are still on-scene. The previously closed roadways are nowopened at this time.
