Commercial Vehicle Fire Snarls Morning Commute

Vermillion County—This morning at 8:45, Indiana State Police and Vermillion County emergency agencies responded to a commercial vehicle fire on State Road 63 near County Road 1780 South (Universal Road).

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Freightliner tractor, driven by 42-year-old Linwood J. Nightingale of Centerville, Iowa, was southbound on SR 63 and reportedly noticed smoke emitting from the interior cabin vents of the tractor. Nightingale pulled to the shoulder and began trying to extinguish the fire in the motor compartment. The flames grew and eventually engulfed the entire tractor.

Fire units from Black Diamond Fire, Clinton City Fire, and Shepardsville Fire suppressed the flames after about 30 minutes. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Atlas SN Leasing Company tractor-trailer was reportedly hauling the non-hazardous cargo of Lysine. No injuries were reported.

The southbound lanes of SR 63 were closed until approximately 9:37a.m., when the passing lane was opened for traffic.

The investigation was conducted by ISP Master Trooper Gary Winters. Assisting were ISP Sergeant Joe Watts, Clinton City Police Chief Billy McClaren, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim DisPennett, and Black Diamond, Clinton City, and Shepardsville Fire Departments.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
