Missing Juvenile at Lake Sonoma
On 7/4/15 at approximately 1552 hours, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office responded to Lake Sonoma on the report that a 14 year old male juvenile was missing in the water. At the time of the call, the Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit deputies were patrolling the lake in their patrol boat and they arrived on the scene shortly after the call was received.
The deputies spoke with witnesses and learned that two male juveniles were being towed on an inter-tube behind a personal watercraft near the private marina. At some point while being towed, both juveniles were ejected from the tube and went into the water. One of the juveniles was able to swim to safety while the other juvenile went under the water and was not seen again. Witnesses reported that the juveniles were not wearing life vests.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office dive team and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office dive team responded to the scene to search for the missing juvenile. Additional resources that were used to assist with the search included an aerial search from Henry 1 and a sonar boat search from the Lakeville Fire Department’s rescue vessel. The US Army Corps also provided assistance with a vessel search of the area.
The dive teams will be in the water tonight until it becomes too unsafe to continue the search. At that time, the search will be suspended until tomorrow morning.
The identity of the missing juvenile will not be disclosed at this time.
