Job Openings

The Jackson Police Department has job openings for the position of Police Officer. It will test potential candidates on August 1.

“This is an excellent opportunity for any citizen interested in becoming a police officer,” said Police Chief Julian Wiser. “We encourage you to apply if you are looking for a career with benefits and compatible salary, if you are in law enforcement elsewhere and want a higher salary or if you are looking for an opportunity to have a new direction in your life.”

Your application must be turned in to the Personnel Department, 127 E. Main Street, Suite 303, by July 15th so the City of Jackson Personnel Office can determine if you are eligible to take the department test on August 1. The beginning annual salary for new officers is $33,113.60.

To meet the minimum qualifications for the police officer position, applicants must …
• Be at least 21 years of age.
• Be a United States citizen.
• Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
• Be physically fit for normal police functions.
• Pass a pre-employment background investigation.
• Meet the City of Jackson’s vision standards of 20/20 or correctable to 20/20 while also passing a color vision test.

If you meet the minimum qualifications, the following documents must also be submitted with your application before the test deadline date: a birth certificate, driver’s license (showing expiration date), Social Security card, copy of your high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, DD-214 Military discharge showing type of discharge and a recent full face photo that will not be returned.

If you have current P.O.S.T Certification or you possess an out-of-state certification acceptable to the Tennessee P.O.S.T Commission (minimum of 400 hours), your starting salary would be: 35,214.40 or $16.93 an hour for a one-year certified officer, $36,358.40 or $17.48/hr. for two years as a certified officer, $39,852.80 or $19.16/hr. for three years as a certified officer, and $42,036.80 or $20.21/hr. for four or more years as a certified officer.

Career Police (Patrol) Officers receive annual step increases on the Jackson Police Department’s P-Program, up to a maximum of $51,313.60 with 14 years of service (topped out Patrol Officer pay), in addition to any annual cost of living increase.

Other benefits for City of Jackson employees are educational incentives; pension plans; 15 paid vacation days, 15 paid sick days and 12 paid holidays a year; medical plan; dental plan; life and accident insurance; full pay during training; opportunities for advancement; health club membership; employee assistance program; and family medical leave.

“If you know of someone, male or female, local or out-of-state who is interested in becoming a police officer, here is an excellent opportunity,” Wiser said. “We encourage you to become one of Jackson Tennessee’s finest by becoming an officer who protects and serves.”
