Investigation into fish kill underway; waterways being tested for safety

A fish kill along the North Fork River has local, state and federal officials combing the waterways to find the cause.
A citizen reported the incident at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 354 Good Road off American Thread Road in Woodlawn.
Emergency officials were on the scene all night, and further investigation revealed dead fish, frogs, lizards and other water animals for an approximate 2-mile span. The N.C. Regional Hazmat Team was called to the scene and conducted testing of water samples. The tests were inconclusive, requiring samples to be sent off to a laboratory.
At this time, the substance that caused the fish kill is unknown, and further testing is ongoing to determine the safety of the creek and surrounding waterways.
More information will be released when it’s available.
