The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching and the Manhattan Beach Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that ALL fireworks, including those branded “Safe and Sane,” are illegal in Manhattan Beach.

Even sparklers, which most people consider safe, can reach temperatures of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, burn people seriously, and cause fires.  Adults wouldn't ordinarily allow children to get near anything that hot, but for some reason they think it's acceptable to put sparklers in the hands of children on the Fourth of July.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department will be actively enforcing laws regarding the possession of all types of fireworks, including sparklers.

Anyone cited or arrested for fireworks violations may be faced with a fine, sentenced to jail, or both. Parents are also liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.

Pet Safety

Fireworks can be fun for you, but dangerous for your pets.  Loud booms and flashing fireworks make humans "oooooo" and "awwww", but they chase our dogs and cats from the safety of their homes.

More pets are lost on 4^th of July than any other day of the year.  Be a responsible Pet Parent this Fourth of July and make sure you provide a safe environment for your four-legged best friends. Although you may be tempted to bring them along to enjoy the festivities, think again, and follow a few rules so that your dog or cat will be safe and happy when the fifth of July rolls around.

• Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Pets often seek out a small den-like place, such as a crate, if they are fearful or stressed. It is recommended to create that safe place and familiarize your pet with it before needed, to reduce stress during the fireworks.  Consider leaving a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep them company.
• Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape, become lost, or become entangled.
• Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. If you lose a pet, or if you find a lost pet, call Manhattan Beach Animal Control dispatch at (310) 802-5159.
