The Mercersburg Police Department is investigating the theft and damage to highway signs owned by the Borough of Mercersburg

Thieves stole three highway signs and damaged another highway sign located at the intersection of East California Street and Jeb Stuart Alley. Sometime between 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015 and 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2015 thieves appeared at the intersection of East California Street and Jeb Stuart Alley and removed a 24”x24” “DO NOT ENTER” highway sign from a steel post located at the southwest corner of the intersection.

Thieves then proceeded to a steel post with a 9”x24”, “NO PARKING THIS SIDE” and a 24”x24”, “DO NOT ENTER” sign that had been removed by contractors installing curbing alone East California Street. The contractors placed the steel post with the signs in a yard along the west side of Jeb Stuart Alley. Thieves removed the “NO PARKING THIS SIDE” sign from the post and bent beyond repair the 24”x24” “DO NOT ENTER” highway sign. Thieves also stole a metal 9”x24”, “JEB STUART ALLEY” sign from a steel post in the northwest corner of the intersection. Thieves fled the scene with the three signs.
