****************** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*******************
Date: 06/30/2015

Fireworks have always been a large part of the Independence Day celebration for the City of Marietta. Fireworks light up the sky providing the grand finale to end a day of festivities on the Historic Marietta Square. Although fireworks are beautiful they can also be dangerous to those operating them and those around them.

As the 4th of July holiday approaches, the Marietta Police Department would like to educate its citizens about the new fireworks law recently passed in Georgia and remind them of safety concerns with exploding fireworks.

To ensure everyone’s safety while celebrating the 4th of July, the Marietta Police Department has compiled a list of tips and a breakdown of the new fireworks law for its citizens:
• On July 1, 2015, fireworks will become legal for all citizens of Georgia to purchase
• You must be 18 years old or older to purchase and explode fireworks
• Fireworks cannot be used within 100 yards of a gas station or facility that refines, possess or blends gasoline
• Fireworks may be exploded between the hours of 10am and midnight on any day of the year. On January 1st, July 3rd, July 4th and December 31st, hours are extended to 10am-2am
• Do NOT allow anyone to explode fireworks if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Use an open area to explode fireworks to prevent a fire
• Stay a safe distance away from the fireworks once activated
The Marietta Police Department encourages everyone to have a wonderful 4th of July and to stay safe this holiday weekend.
