ORIGINAL MEDIA RELEASE:

On June 19, 2015 at approximately 6:04 PM officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and pedestrian in the 600 block of Higuera. The vehicle was turning W/B onto Higuera from N/B Broad and struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital by ambulance and is currently being treated for his injuries.
A DUI investigation was conducted at the scene and the driver was arrested for felony DUI resulting in the injury of another.
The collision investigation is being handled by the traffic safety unit of the San Luis Obispo Police Department. More details will be released at a later time.

UPDATED INFORMATION:

On June 22, 2015 at approximately 4:45 PM, 89 year old Alvino Figueroa, the pedestrian involved in this collision, was removed from life support at Sierra Vista Hospital. At 5:15 PM, he passed away peacefully.

The driver, 63 year old Dennis Whittinghill of Los Osos, was arrested for felony DUI at the scene and later posted bail. The case has been forwarded to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office for additional charges related to the death of Mr. Figueroa. A booking photo of Mr. Whittinghill is attached.
