Protect your belongings – do not leave them in your car
We have seen a spike in “smash-and-grab” auto burglaries lately where a suspect smashes a car window to gain access to the vehicle and its contents.
You can help prevent becoming a victim of this type of crime:
- Never leave your valuables – cell phone, laptop, wallet, GPS, backpack – in plain-view in your unattended vehicle.
- If you must leave valuables behind – stash them in your truck prior to arriving at your destination. Why? An opportunistic burglar can watch as you store your belongings and will know to look in your trunk.
- Always lock your doors and close your windows.
- If you have a car alarm, be sure to arm it.
Many crimes are what we call “crimes of opportunity.” A wallet left in your center console is a quick win for a would-be-burglar. They can smash your window and steal from you within seconds. Don’t make it easy for criminals who are looking for an easy target; if you value your belongings, take them with you.
