Two Injured and One Arrested in Hit and Run Crash on I-65 CORRECTION-Pictures-Disregard Earlier Pictures!

Jasper County-A hit and run crash on I-65, early this morning, ended with two people being injured and one being arrested.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Martin Benner revealed that at approximately 7:00 a.m., this Tuesday, June 23, 2015, morning a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, driven by Allen R Johnson, 69 of Afton, Tennessee, was northbound on I-65 at the 222 mile marker (this is two miles north of the Fair Oaks exit) in the right lane when the next thing he knew his pickup was sent into the bushes/trees on the east side of the road.

Trooper Andrew Rasala who was on his way to assist Trooper Benner came across a 2015 Nissan Murano who had extensive front end damage parked on the shoulder north bound at the 224 mile marker.  The driver, James Holliman, 43 of Dayton, Ohio, stated he had to go off the roadway because of encountering slower moving traffic and hit a guardrail or road sign.  He also told Rasala that he had called AAA to come tow his vehicle.

Benner upon further investigation at his crash realized that there was white paint transfer on the Colorado pickup, he also located car debris that later matched the Nissan and there was a trail of antifreeze leading from the scene.  Further investigation determined that the Nissan had come up behind the pickup hitting it in the rear sending the pickup into the bushes/trees.  The Nissan continued driving northbound until it was forced to stop because of the front end damage it sustained.

During the impound inventory on the Nissan, Troopers Benner and Rasala located approximately 1 ½ pounds of marijuana, paraphernalia, and two loaded firearms.

Johnson was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer with non-life threatening injuries.  His vehicle was totaled and had to be towed from the scene.

Holliman was also taken to Jasper County Hospital for non-life threatening injuries; Upon being released he was taken to the Jasper County Jail where he was charged with:

  • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash, Level 6 Felony
  • Dealing Marijuana, Level 5 Felony
  • Possession of Paraphernalia, Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Firearms by Felon, Level 6 Felony

Assisting: Rensselaer Fire Department, Prompt Ambulance, Cheevers Towing and Farneys Towing
