Brush Fire - unincorporated La Mesa

Two people were detained for questioning in connection with a ten acre brush fire that broke out in the unincorporated area of La Mesa.

The fire is now contained. There are no injuries. No structures were burned. All roads previously closed have since reopened.

A driver flagged down a deputy from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station upon seeing the fire in the area of Campo Road and Via Mercado just before 4:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19th.

Deputies from the Rancho San Diego, Santee, Lakeside, and Lemon Grove Stations/Substations responded to the scene. CHP assisted with road closures while CAL FIRE and Sheriff's ASTREA worked on putting out the fire.

The Sheriff's Bomb/Arson Unit is continuing the investigation into the fire. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers. You can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Call (888) 580-8477.

This is the San Diego County Sheriff's Department with a safety message on Friday, June 19th.

A ten-acre brush fire is burning in La Mesa. The Mercado fire broke out just before 4:00 p.m. near the Campo Road and Via Mercado.

If you wish to evacuate as a precaution, proceed to Monte Vista High School located at 3230 Sweetwater Springs Boulevard, Spring Valley.

The fire is approaching Highway 94 which is shut down to westbound traffic. Smoke from the fire is also affecting visibility for drivers in the area. If Highway 94 is part of your evening commute, consider an alternate route.

Road closures are also reported at Northbound Calavo Dr. and Avocado Blvd.

There is increased law enforcement activity in the area with Sheriff's ASTREA flying overhead. This is a developing situation and this is all the information we have at the moment.
