Afternoon Crash Sends Three To Hospital

Henry County – A crash this afternoon on I-70 east bound at the 127 mile marker sent three Kansas women to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. The three were traveling east bound in a 2010 Mazda when they ran up on traffic that was slowed to a near stop due to a traffic stop and criminal incident the Henry County Sheriff’s Department was working in the area of the 128 mile marker.

The driver of the Mazda, Ellayne Drew, age 65 of Wichita, Kansas, was unable to get stopped and drove her car to the right off the roadway and into a tree in the edge of the ditch.  Drew and her front seat passenger, Shannon Welch, age 39, and back seat passenger, Brittany Welch age 14, also of Wichita, were all transported to Henry County Memorial Hospital with minor non-life threatening injuries.

All three were wearing safety belts, and the investigating officer, Trooper Doug Snyder, stated “That the seatbelts were effective in reducing the nature of the injuries.” Trooper Snyder was assisted at the scene by ISP Sergeant Todd Wallace and Trooper Paul Harrison, as well as Henry County EMS.

Remember, seatbelts reduce your risk of injury by up to 50% during a crash.  Make sure everyone is properly buckled up in your vehicle before leaving.
