APD officer performs mouth to mouth resusciatation on child in life saving efforts after near drowning.
On Sunday June 14th at 3:40pm, APD officers were sent to the 600 block of S Grand on a report of a child drowning in a swimming pool. APD as well as AFD & AMS responded to the area. The caller indicated the 3 year old child was unconscious and not breathing. APD Officer Vinilla King was the first emergency responder on scene. Off. King located the caller along with a small child lying on the ground. Officer King was able to ascertain that the parent had performed some CPR on the child however the child was still struggling to breath. Officer King could hear gurgling noises and it appeared the child still had water in its lungs. Off. King performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the child until the child was able to breathe easier. At that time AFD and AMS personnel had arrived on the scene. The child was transported to a local hospital and treated. The child was able to make a full recovery. Due to Officer King’s actions, this incident will be forwarded to the Police Department’s Awards Committee for consideration of a Life Saving Award.
In May of 2011, Officer King along with fellow APD Officers Cruz, Mariscal and Thurman responded to a vehicle accident in which the car had caught fire. The 4 officer’s risk their own safety in battling a car fire to remove an occupant. The four officers all received the Amarillo Police Department’s Medal of Valor as well as the State of Texas Medal of Valor award through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
