Advisory

Distraction Burglaries

DATE OF RELEASE: June 15, 2015
Recently, the West Covina Police Department received information regarding distraction burglaries where suspects were wearing uniforms consistent with a repairman stating they are working on the street lights. There are usually two suspects involved who will knock on the door of a residence and tell the resident they need to do some type of repair work in their yard. One of the suspects distracts the resident by bringing them into the backyard to show the resident where they are going to be doing the work. The other suspect waits for the resident to be out of view, then enters the residence and commits a burglary. The suspect usually exits the residence within a few minutes.
The West Covina Police Department recommends that if you are contacted by anyone requesting to enter your home or backyard for a service you have not requested, demand identification and the name of the company they are working for. You have the right to call the company to verify that someone was sent to your home. If you are alone, call for a neighbor to assist you before allowing anyone into your home or yard. If you feel that the situation is suspicious, contact the police department.
