Local Task Force Recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On June 15th, 2006, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was developed by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), and continues to be celebrated annually on that date. Celebrating WEAAD in local communities like Cobb County brings a better understanding of all forms of elder abuse and prevention. In that spirit the Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force (CEATF) is dedicated to local elder abuse awareness.

The CEATF was created in 2010 by the Cobb County Safety Neighborhood Commission. The CEATF is a multi-jurisdictional organization that addresses financial, physical, emotional, sexual and institutional abuse of seniors. In addition, the CEATF provides elder abuse training to our community, health care and elder service providers. The CEATF members also meet quarterly to discuss relevant issues and to foster professional collaboration.

The CEATF was recently recognized by the Atlanta Regional Commission for a series of accomplishments including, but not limited to: conducting a series of compelling public presentations to raise awareness to the widespread problem of elder abuse; leading a legislative effort to elevate the Georgia law concerning unlicensed personal care homes to felony status; coordinating the first prosecution for racketeering to exploit the elderly in Georgia; and at the request of State senior services authorities, conducting a large scale tabletop training seminar concerning elder abuse.

Presently the task force is developing a Georgia senior citizens’ bill of rights; partnering with and advising nearby counties in methods to combat elder abuse, and coordinating training for public safety responders (police, fire, emergency medical personnel) in methods of detecting and reporting elder abuse.

The Marietta Police Department is proud to be an active member of CEATF and recommits our efforts in public awareness and fighting elder abuse in all its forms.
