LASD Search & Rescue Climb Highest Oregon Mountain in “Climb for Breast Cancer”, #LASD SAR

On Saturday, June 13, 2015, three members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team will begin their ascent to the top of Mount Hood, the highest mountain in the state of Oregon, to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.  They will reach the summit,11,249 feet in elevation, early Sunday, June 14, 2015.  They are raising money for research conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The three reserve deputies are assigned to the Montrose Search and Rescue Team, located at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.  Between them, they have hundreds of lifesaving missions, and as volunteers they donate hundreds of hours each year.  Their names are: Cindy England, Mike Leum, and Robert Sheedy.

The team members’ on-going rescue training keeps them in top physical condition, along with being able to climb safely in harsh winter environments. During previous climbs they have encountered challenging situations, including one member falling into a crevasse and two members stuck in a white-out blizzard.

Reserve deputies are part-time volunteer peace officers.  They supplement the regular operation of the Sheriff’s Department by working in the uniform reserve, mounted programs, and search and rescue operations.  Reserve deputies are required to volunteer an average of 20 hours per month.
