Two Seriously Injured in Two Vehicle Crash
Plainfield, IN- Two people were seriously injured in a two vehicle crash on I-70 early this afternoon that had the interstate closed for approximately ninety minutes.
At 12:45 p.m. this afternoon, Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched to I-70 WB at the 67mm (near Ronald Reagan Pkwy) to the report of two vehicle personal injury crash with entrapment.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Tanya Bianchi, 53, of Indianapolis was operating a 1994 Dodge van WB on I-70 at the 67mm. According to witnesses and evidence at the scene, the Dodge van was on the emergency lane off the right side of the interstate sitting stationary. The van suddenly turned left onto the interstate in what appears to be an attempt to utilize an emergency vehicle crossover to go EB on I-70. Investigators think perhaps that the driver was lost or had missed the intended exit and was attempting to utilize the cross over to go EB.
Vera Micic, of Ontario Canada, operating a 2014 Volvo semi-tractor trailer WB on I-70, observed the van on the emergency lane and moved left to the middle lane. The van reportedly pulled onto the interstate into the path of the semi-tractor trailer and was struck in the driver’s side by the semi.
Bianchi was transported to Methodist Hospital by Lifeline Helicopter and her husband, David Bianchi, 55, of Indianapolis, was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital. Both were reported to be in serious condition.
Micic and her co-driver were not injured.
The WB interstate lanes were closed for approximately ninety minutes while the crash was investigated and the wreckage cleared. The WB traffic was detoured onto Ronald Regan Pkwy.
