Indiana State Police Working Hard to Protect Highway Workers

The Indiana State Police at the Lafayette Post are working hard at protecting highway construction workers who are helping build and repair roads throughout the Lafayette District.

Troopers worked extra patrol on the construction area of I-65 at the 193 MM (that is the US 231 exit in White County) from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. yesterday.  Four troopers made 21 traffic arrests with 20 being for speeding and 3 warnings in a construction zone.  The speed limit in the construction zone drops from interstate speed of 70 mph to construction speed of 35 mph.  Signs are well posted with drops of 10 mph increments in the construction zone.

Motorists must realize that construction workers sometimes are near or right up against the highway while repairing roadways in Indiana.  They may not be facing traffic at all times and cannot see traffic coming at them.  Aggressive driving, speeding, or driver inattention puts construction workers at risk.  Drivers should be alert to changes in speed, lane changes, and possible traffic stoppage when entering a construction zone.  Slow down, watch for signs advising of speed changes and lane movements and be on the lookout for construction workers improving your highways.
