An officer was carrying an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the patrol vehicle and connected the electrodes to the patient’s chest to determine if a shock was necessary; a shock was delivered. The officer conducted chest compressions and a second shock before being relieved by the Santa Clara Fire Department. St. Justin’s Church parishioners, Communications Dispatchers, Officers Habib and Lagergren as well as members of the Santa Clara Fire Department are credited with quick response to restore the heart’s normal rhythm and save a life.
In September, 2014, the Santa Clara Police Department expanded its public safety resources to include Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) to give anyone impacted by sudden cardiac arrest another chance at life. The Santa Clara Police Department utilized Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant funds to purchase five AED’s. Eventually, Police Chief Michael J.
