87th Annual OPD School Safety Patrols Celebration

Oakland, CA —On Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 5:00 PM the 87th Annual OPD Safety Patrol Pass in Review will take place at the Scottish Rite Temple, 1547 Lakeside Drive, Oakland, CA 94612.

Approximately 400 student crossing guards from Oakland Unified School District elementary schools (3rd, 4th, and 5th graders) will be at the Pass in Review, celebrating their hard work and dedication.

The School Safety Patrol program, found at public schools nationwide, is sponsored by AAA (formerly known as the American Automobile Association) in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and schools. In Oakland, OPD and AAA have been working together for over 90 years.

The program benefits students, schools and the community:
• Serving on the safety patrol gives youngsters an early sense of responsibility and an idea of what it means to do community service. Students gain safety awareness, leadership skills and teamwork experience.
• Schools benefit from the promotion of traffic safety awareness and the constructive outlet for student energy.
• The community benefits from safer environments for pedestrians and motorists and the positive collaboration between students, parents, schools and law enforcement.

Parents, teachers and supporters will be in attendance at the Pass in Review to celebrate and cheer the young people’s dedication and hard work. Officials attending the event will include key members of upper level AAA management; Lt. Dave Elzey, OPD Traffic Operations Section; and OPD Chaplin Rufus Watkins.

Thank you to AAA and Oakland Public Schools for an outstanding job, but most of all, a BIG thank you to all of the students whose participation makes this program work.
