Details: On 05/26/2015 at approximately 9:58 pm, Gilroy Police Communications began receiving several calls of an in-progress fight occurring in the 300 Block of Mantelli Drive. The first responding officer arrived and found Jose Luis Lara Jr. and the victim engaged in a physical confrontation. Upon approaching the combatants, the officer observed the victim to be suffering from a stab wound to the face. Both parties were ordered to stop fighting and remain on the ground. Both complied with the officer’s direction. Additional officers arrived and both parties were detained without further incident.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene to treat both parties for injuries sustained during the fight. The victim was transported by ground ambulance to a bay area trauma center where he was treated for a non-life threatening laceration to the face as well as other minor injuries. The victim was released from the hospital that same evening.
Jose Lara was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and medically cleared for incarceration. Lara was later transported to the Santa Clara County Jail where he was booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
It appears that Lara and the victim are acquaintances and were in the area together when for unknown reasons; Lara attacked and stabbed the victim. The victim was able to defend himself and engaged Lara in a physical fight until officers arrived on scene.
This incident does not appear to be gang related and the motive for the attack is unknown at this time.
