Thefts of tailgates and third row seats are on the rise

The Torrance Police Department has seen an increase in third row seats and tailgate thefts.  Below are some ways to prevent these types of thefts.

How to prevent tailgate thefts:

There are simple locks that can be purchased from auto part stores that can help deter the thief. Placing these locks on the tailgate will require thieves to bring tools and this may deter them from taking the tailgate. Consumers can also buy an aftermarket handle with a lock, or a lock that secures over the side pin to prevent the tailgate removal. These products can range from $20-$200.

The following link is for one of the many aftermarket devices to help prevent the tailgate being removed:

How to prevent third row seat thefts:

  • Use a bike cable or gun cable lock to lock the seat to the floor of the SUV. Using a cable lock will make your third row seat less desirable to the thief.
  • Check with your Chevrolet dealership. Some sell an anti-theft device through their parts department.
  • If you do not use your seat, take it out and store it at your residence.
  • Engrave your seat with some type of identification number such as your California Driver’s License number as these seats are not serialized. If your seat is taken, please notify the responding officers that you have marked your property.

If you see anything suspicious please call the Torrance Police Department at 310-618-5641.
