On Monday, May 25, 2015, at approximately 11:10 AM, the Palm Springs Police Department received a report of a single vehicle traffic collision involving a motorcycle in the area of Gene Autry Trail (SR 111) and District Center Drive. The preliminary investigation indicates the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on Gene Autry Trail (SR 111) at District Center Drive at a high rate of speed and lost control. The motorcycle then struck a curb before striking a few fixed objects adjacent to the roadway. The motorcyclist was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene. The accident scene and debris field extended into the northbound lanes of the roadway. The name, age, and city of residence for the motorcyclist will later be released by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Coroner's Bureau. PSPD is asking all motorist to avoid Gene Autry Trail (SR 111) between Ramon Road and Escena. Gene Autry Trail (SR 111) will be closed in both directions north of Ramon Road to Escena. The roadway will be closed for the next several hours while PSPD investigates this collision and cleans up the roadway area. The Palm Springs Air Museum can be accessed by traveling southbound Gene Autry Trail from Vista Chino.
