“Police Blotter” Highlights – Ending May 17, 2015

ASSAULT WITH DEADLY WEAPON
On Monday, May 11th, around 3 p.m., Ofc. Allen and Ofc. Lockett responded to the report of an assault that occurred near Watkins St. and Smith St. The victim had met the suspect at that location to potentially sell him a vehicle. The suspect was unhappy with the vehicle, threw his car keys at the victim and then attempted to hit her as he drove away. The suspect was described as a black male in his late 30s to early 40s, with dark short hair and a salt/pepper beard. The suspect vehicle was described as a gray or black late model Mercedes four-door vehicle.

On Tuesday, May 12th, around 5:30 p.m., Ofc. Blanchard was dispatched to Carrie Ct. During a family dispute, a 29-year-old male kicked in the victim’s door and hit her with a lamp. He was arrested.

VEHICLE THEFT ARRESTS
On Monday, May 11th, around 8:15 a.m., Ofc. Olson conducted a vehicle stop for expired registration and no front license plate. The vehicle was determined to be stolen out of Hayward. Raul Ramirez, a 38-year-old Newark resident, was arrested for vehicle theft.

On Friday, May 15th, around 12:30 a.m., Ofc. Stables conducted a felony traffic stop on a vehicle stolen out of Hayward. A 15-year-old male and 16-year-old male, both residents of Hayward, were arrested and released to their parents.

On Friday, May 15th, around 5:45 p.m., Ofc. Parodi conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle stolen out of Hayward. Allen Sundita, a 45-year-old male, Fremont resident, was arrested for vehicle theft. The passenger, a 36-year-old male, Hayward resident, was arrested for possession of marijuana for sales.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Marijuana Cultivation:
On Wednesday, May 13th, around 12:30 a.m., Sgt. Mendez was in the area of 10th St. and I St. when he noticed an extremely strong odor of unburnt marijuana. Officers went back to the area in the afternoon and were given consent to enter a business, where they subsequently discovered a large illegal marijuana grow operation. More than 1,200 marijuana plants were seized, and five suspects were arrested: a 50-year-old male and 52-year-old female out of Union City; a 29-year-old male and 41-year-old male out of San Francisco; and a 46-year-old male out of Oakland.

Indecent Exposure:
On Friday, May 15th, around 9:45 p.m., Ofc. Olson was dispatched to the area of Decoto Rd. and Alvarado-Niles Rd. on the report of an indecent exposure. The suspect was masturbating in his car and calling out to a victim before the victim drove away. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, 6’0”-6’2” with a bald or shaved head. His vehicle was described as a black 2000s Scion TC two-door.

Grand Theft:
On Saturday, May 16th, around 1:30 p.m., Ofc. Parodi was dispatched to the UCPD station on reports of a theft. The victim said he was in a courtyard at James Logan High School, when three juvenile males ran past him, and one male grabbed the iPhone out of his hand. The victim does not desire prosecution.

Concealed Weapon:
On Sunday, May 17th, around 3 a.m., Ofc. Olson conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation. During the stop, it was determined that the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle out of Hayward. A search of the vehicle also yielded an unloaded .22 caliber rifle. A 16-year-old male out of Castro Valley was arrested for the vehicle theft and weapons charges. Also arrested on weapons charges were Kusitafu Makasini, a 19-year-old, Union City resident, and a 17-year-old male out of Hayward.

BURGLARIES AND CAR THEFTS

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 17th, there was one reported residential burglary:
• 3800 block of Shinglewood Ct.: Occurred between Friday, May 15th at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 16th at 1:15 p.m. A window was unlocked or pried open. The loss included jewelry, electronics, cash, paintings and Persian rugs.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
From Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 17th, there were two reported commercial burglaries:
• 30000 block of Industrial Parkway: Occurred on Monday, May 11th, around 5:15 a.m. A glass window was smashed, and the loss included cash from the register, and a safe. See adjacent surveillance photo.
• 30000 block of Ahern St.: Occurred between Friday, May 8th at 3 p.m. and Monday, May 11th at 10 a.m. A rear sliding metal door was damaged, possibly by a vehicle. Two large machines were stolen.

AUTO BURGLARIES AND VEHICLE THEFTS
From Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 17th, there were four reported auto burglaries. In two of the incidents, stolen items included backpacks, laptops and a purse that were left in plain view. In another incident, there was nothing of value located in the vehicle or the trunk, so there was no loss. Safety Tip: As a reminder, never leave items of value inside your vehicle!

From Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 17th, there were six reported vehicle thefts. As of the time of this report, four of the vehicles have been recovered.

EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHTS
Last week, Ofc. Fonseca, Ofc. Lanier, Ofc. Rodriguez, Ofc. Seto and Lt. Calcagno went to Searles Elementary School for UCPD’s new “Recess with Cops” program. The officers played sports and games with the children, or just spent time talking with them. UCPD plans to visit other Union City schools for recess a couple times per month.
