The North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics


On Friday, May 22nd , 2015, deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office along with officers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Rutherfordton Police Department, Forest City Police Department, Lake Lure Police Department, Spindale Police Department. N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, N.C. Wildlife, N.C. Probation Office, U. S. Department of Homeland Security, and Rutherford County D.S.S., will be participating in the North Carolina Special Olympics Torch Run.


The North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics will begin at 08:00 am.

Please be aware of runners and possible traffic congestion.

The Special Olympics Torch will be carried over 33 miles through Rutherford County, from the McDowell County line on Cove Road to the Rutherford County line on Hwy 74.

The Torch will travel Cove Road, Hwy 64/74, Charlotte Road, onto Hwy 74 to the county line.

Once the Special Olympics Torch reaches the Rutherford County line, it will be handed off to officers from Cleveland County where it will continue its journey to Raleigh.

Each summer, law enforcement officials carry the Flame of Hope across the state in The Torch Run Final Leg, culminating in the lighting of the cauldron to officially open the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. The 2,000-mile, 15-day Torch Run Relay involves more than 2,500 law enforcement officers and personnel representing more than 200 law enforcement agencies across North Carolina. http://nctorchrun.com/

A cotton T-shirt requires a minimum donation of $15 while a technical running shirt requires a minimum donation of $20.
