BACKGROUND

LOS ANGELES, CA –National Police Week in Los Angeles will conclude on Sat., May 16 (8 a.m.) with a 5K and 10K memorial run in honor of Los Angeles Airport Police Officer Tommy Scott. Scott was the first and to date only Airport Police Officer ever killed in the line of duty. He was killed ten years ago on April 29, 2005 at the age of 35, in a carjacking incident after stopping a suspicious man near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). In 2010, his killer, William Sadowski, was convicted of carjacking and first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

LAX police department motor officer Raymond Woods, a 14-year department veteran and Medal of Valor recipient will run the entire course in full motor uniform, complete with motor boots and helmet to honor Scott. Woods received the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions during the Nov. 1, 2013, shooting in Terminal 3 at LAX.

"Scott was a junior academy class mate of mine and his locker was directly across from mine, so I saw him everyday," explain Officer Raymond Woods. "Officers from other departments have ran 26 miles in patrol uniform so the least I can do is run a 10K in my boots for Tommy."

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) will join the Los Angeles Airports Police Athletics & Activities League and Association of Airport Employees will host the Tommy Scott Memorial 5K & 10K LAX Run on Sat., May 16. The race kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Westchester/LAX Fire Station No. 5 (8900 S. Emerson Ave.) with on-site registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Tommy Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund. For more information, please visit http://laapoa.com/lax_run_2015.php.
