Suspect led deputies on a foot pursuit through a residential area tossing a loaded semi-automatic rifle

DATE/TIME: May 13, 2015/7:24pm

INCIDENT: Attempted Home Invasion/Felon in Possession of a Firearm

LOCATION: 1000 Block of H St. Colton Ca.

SUSPECT: Jesse Lobato, 24, resident of Colton

VICTIM: Confidential

SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 7:24 p.m., while on patrol in the unincorporated area of Colton, Sheriff’s Central Station deputies noticed Lobato in the area of Grand Ave and H Street. Lobato was acting suspiciously and when he noticed the deputies, he began to quickly walk away in the opposite direction. As deputies approached him, Lobado walked towards a house where the resident and her small children were in the front yard. When asked where he was going, Lobado said he was going into the backyard of his home. The resident immediately told deputies she did not know Lobado and he did not live there. Lobado suddenly fled from deputies, running through yards on H Street. As deputies pursued him, Lobado attempted to force entry into the victim’s residence through the front door, however the victim was able to hold the door closed, denying his entry. Lobato continued to flee from deputies, running through residential yards and jumping fences. As he was running, deputies saw him produce a handgun which he had hidden on his person. Deputies watched Lobado throw the gun over a fence, into the yard of a nearby residence. He continued leading deputies on a chase, south on Grand Ave to Valley Blvd where he was ultimately taken into custody after a brief struggle. Deputies recovered the gun thrown by Lobado and determined it to be a loaded and fully functional, .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle which appeared to have been cut down and converted into a pistol. The weapon was also found with a loaded high capacity magazine attached to it.

During the investigation, Lobado initially gave a false name to deputies in an attempt to avoid identification. He was found to be an active Colton Gang Member with a Felony No Bail arrest warrant for violation of his PRCS Probation and Robbery. Lobado was arrested and booked at West Valley Detention Center for several felonies to include; Attempted Home Invasion, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felony Possession of a Firearm with Intent to Commit a Felony and Gang Enhancement. During the pursuit of Lobado, one deputy sustained an injury to his ankle. He was treated and later released from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

As mentioned, during the investigation, it was discovered that Lobado was on active Felony PRCS release for Robbery out of Victorville, as a result of California Assembly Bill 109.

As part of Governor Jerry Brown's Realignment Plan, or Assembly Bill 109, to comply with a U.S. Supreme Court Decision requiring the state to lower its prison population; offenders with non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious convictions will serve reduced sentences in county jails and be placed on local supervision through county Probation.
