Valencia: Zone, Public Safety and Crime Prevention Information for the week of 04/20/2015 to 04/26/2015.

Last week, the following Part 1 crimes occurred in Zone 5 (Valencia)

A robbery occurred near the 24300 block of Town Center Drive.    Two males approached the victim in a parking lot and one male tried unsuccessfully to rob the victim of his cell phone.  The suspect told the victim to leave his cell phone on the ground and leave the area.  The victim fearing for his safety left the phone and ran from the area.   The same suspects went to another location and tried unsuccessfully to rob an off duty deputy.   They left the area and pulled up next to a third victim and threatened to physically harm him.  A short time later the same suspects were seen by patrol deputies and taken into custody without incident.   An outstanding job by our patrol deputies and everyone involved in the event.

A burglary occurred near the 23000 block of Cinema Drive.  An unknown suspect smashed the front glass door to the location and shattered the display case, and stole thousands of dollars worth of belts, socks and gloves.

Two incidents of arson took place near the 24700 block of McBean Parkway.  An unknown suspect lit a flyer on fire which was attached to a board the location.  Nothing else on the board caught fire or inside the facility.  A second incident took place at the same location.  An unknown suspect lit a plastic hand sanitizer dispenser on fire in the halls.  This case is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Valley Station Detective Bureau.

A vehicle theft took place near the 23400 block of Abbey Place.  The victim’s 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from the location.  The vehicle was parked and locked while parked at the location overnight.

Two incidents of mail theft took place near the 26000 block of Sombras Court.  An unknown suspect stole the victim’s mail from her mail box.  A neighbor found the victims mail open on the paseo located behind the victim’s home.

A theft from a vehicle took place near the 24700 block of Masters Cup Way.  An unknown suspect stole several items from the bed of the victim’s truck while it was parked overnight.  The items were left unsecured in the bed of the vehicle.

Over the past week a total of six incidents involving shoplifting took place.  A total of four suspects were arrested directly related to these incidents.   In each case the suspects walked into the location and tried to exit the location without paying for the items they had concealed on their persons.

This past week we had a couple thefts occur in which items were stolen from the porch of the victims.  The items were left on the porch by the courier company.  The items showed they had been delivered, but when the victim checked for it, he realized they had been stolen.

We are still seeing a large amount of calls coming into the station regarding the general public becoming victims of identity theft from telemarking scams.   Please take a minute to review the following prevention tips I have laid out below.

Telemarketing Scams

Many legitimate companies sell their products or services through telemarketing by either calling consumers or advertising a number for consumers to call. Charities also use telemarketing techniques, unfortunately fraudulent telemarketers rob people every day, using phones as their weapons. The following are tips to help protect yourself from Telemarketing scams.

1. Know who you’re dealing with. If the company or charity is unfamiliar, check it out with your state or local consumer protection agency and the Better Business Bureau.

2. Be aware that "no complaint" is no guarantee. Fraudulent operators open and close quickly, so the fact that no one has made a complaint yet doesn’t mean that the company or charity is legitimate. You still need to look for other danger signs of fraud.

3. Don’t believe promises of easy money. If someone claims that you can earn money with little or no work, get a loan or credit card even if you have bad credit or make money on an investment with little or no risk, it’s probably a scam. One should always remember, that an offer that sounds too good to be true, probably is.

4. Think twice before entering contests operated by unfamiliar companies. Fraudulent marketers sometimes use contest entry forms to identify potential victims.

5. Never pay to play. It’s illegal for a company to require you to buy something or pay a fee in order to win or claim a prize. Buying something doesn’t improve your chances of winning.

6. Resist pressure. Legitimate companies will be happy to send you detailed information and give you time to make a decision. It is probably a scam if the marketer demands that you act immediately or will not take "No" for an answer.

7. Guard your personal information. Only provide your credit card or bank account number when you are actually paying for something. Do not give your social security number to a telemarketer.

8. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to scams that take advantage of people who live alone. Seniors need to be wary when dealing with salespersons, particularly over the phone.

9 .A common scam to be aware of is the "Canadian lottery scam". The potential victims are contacted over the phone and are told that they have won several million dollars in the Canadian lottery. However in order to receive the winning money, the victims are told that they need to pay taxes on the winning money, usually several thousand dollars. The victims are instructed to send cashiers checks to various post office box locations in either the United States or Canada, defrauding the victims of their money.

10. Use common sense and ask for names, addresses and call back phone numbers. If you feel suspicious simply hang up. If you are victimized contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661 255-1121 for advice and/or assistance.
