Two dead, seven injured in two vehicle collision near Mattawa

MATTAWA, Wash. (04MAY2015) – Two people were killed and seven injured during a two vehicle collision near Mattawa Sunday night.

Emergency responders were call about 10 p.m. for the crash at the intersection of Road 24 Southwest and Road R-Southwest.

Roman Rodriguez, 42 of Mattawa, was driving a 2011 Hyundai Elantra northbound on Road R-Southwest and failed to stop or slow for the stop sign at Road 24-Southwest. Rodriguez’s car collided in the intersection with a 2006 Honda Civic driven by Emiliano Bravo, 45 Mattawa, which was travelling west on Road 24. Rodriguez’s car rolled and slid into a vineyard.

Roman Rodriguez sustained a concussion, broken ribs and internal injuries. He is listed in stable condition at Yakima Memorial Hospital. He was wearing his seatbelt in the collision.

There were four passengers in Rodriguez’s car, all of whom were related:

• Juan Gonzalez, 65 of Mattawa died at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.
• Maria Gonzalez Hernandez, 29 of Mattawa, was not wearing a seatbelt. She was partially ejected and died at the scene.
• An 8-year-old boy and 4-year-old boy were not restrained and sustained minor injuries. They were transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital where they were treated and then released.
• Martha Hernandez, 59 of Mattawa, was not wearing a seatbelt. She was partially ejected and sustained numerous injuries. She was flown by Northwest MedStar to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland and is listed in critical condition.

Emiliano Bravo was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. He was transported by ambulance to Kadlec Medical Center with chest injuries and is listed in stable condition.

Estella Machuca, 57 of Mattawa, was a passenger in the Honda and sustained a broken leg. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision. She was transported to Kadlec Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.

Rufina Bravo, 41 of Mattawa, was a passenger in the Honda and was wearing her seatbelt. She was transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. She was treated and released.

Alcohol and drugs are not a factor in the collision. Driver inattention by Roman Rodriguez is the cause of the collision.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office Motor Traffic Unit is investigating.
