May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Nationally, Mental Health Month raises awareness about mental illness and related issues in the United States. In recent times, attitudes towards mental health issues appear to be changing. Negative stigma associated with mental health has reduced and there has been growing acceptance towards mental health issues and support for people with them. One in four adults experience mental health problems in any given year.

Therefore, there is no question that law enforcement officers are increasingly the ones responding to people with mental illness who are in crisis. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has deployed the Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) to assist police officers with mental health calls for service, crisis intervention training and the implementation of strategies that effectively engage and link persons suffering from mental illness to appropriate services.

The LAPD’s Community Relations Section, Crime Prevention Unit and the Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) have compiled resources for National Mental Health Awareness Month to best support coordinated efforts for officers and community alike
