Semi Rolls onto Pickup Pinning Occupants

Hammond-Today at approximately 10:33 a.m. (CDT) on the ramp from NB US 41 to WB I-80 (this is the Hammond /Munster exit at the 1 MM) a semi entering I-80 was traveling to fast and rolled onto a pickup exiting the interstate.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brian White has revealed that a white 2007 Volvo owned by Legacy Express LLC out of Fond du Lac, WI and driven by Michael D. Grunski, 51 of Fond du Lac was pulling a 2015 Stoughton trailer with Pepsi products on board.  As he was coming down the ramp a black 2001 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by Anageli G. Campos, 61 and her husband Christopher, 54 of E. Chicago were traveling WB on I-80 exiting onto US 41 SB.  Campos saw the semi coming at a very fast rate, slowed to let the semi go by when it rolled on top of the pickup pinning both inside of the truck.  The trailer landed on the pickup luckily where the load was not in the trailer.

Both Anageli and Christopher were extricated by Hammond Fire Department from their pickup with very minor injuries.  They both were transported to Munster Community Hospital with minor injuries.  Grunski was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.  The ramp was closed for about three and a half hours for cleanup, investigation of the crash and providing aid to the injured.

Assisting at the scene were Troopers from the Lowell Post, Hammond Police Department, Bert's Towing out of Hammond and the ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.

Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
