Update on the car / pedestrian crash on M 40 HWY north of Withers St. in Newberg TWP Cass County Michigan. Evidence and witness statements have helped Deputies identify the driver and vehicle involved in the car / pedestrian fatal accident that occurred on M 40 HWY on 4/26/2015. The driver's name and the vehicle description can not be released at this time as the Cass County Sheriff's office continues to investigate the incident. It appears that Gowens was sitting in the roadway in the north bound lane when the driver of the vehicle that hit him was unable to stop or avoid a collision with Gowens. Law Enforcement officials were able to determine what had transpired in the accident after further information was gathered from witnesses that had left the scene that correlated with information received from the suspect driver at the time of the accident. This coupled with evidence collected at the scene have helped provide deputies with the information needed to answer questions about who struck Gowens in the roadway on the night of the accident. This case remains under investigation and no further information will be released until the investigation is completed and reviewed by the Prosecutor's Office.




Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood, Jr. reports that his deputies handled a fatal car verses pedestrian crash on M 40 just north of Withers St in Newberg township, Cass County Michigan. That crash happened on April 26, 2015 approximately 1:20 a.m. The pedestrian is identified as 25 year old Duke Gowens of Cassopolis, Michigan. Early investigation shows that Mr. Gowens was in the north bound lane of M 40 when an unknown vehicle traveling north bound struck him. Mr. Gowens succumbed his injuries at the scene.
