Saturday Morning Fight during Little 500 Weekend Breaks into Shots Being Fired

Bloomington – Just after 1:00 o’clock Saturday morning, Indiana State Police Troopers on foot patrol between Dunn and Lincoln Streets observed a large fight break out in a parking lot just across from Memorial Stadium.

As Troopers began to run toward the scene in an effort to stop the fight, three shots were heard in the middle of the altercation. Troopers continued, and as they crossed Dunn Street, two more shots were fired. Party goers then began running in all directions. When Troopers arrived in the parking lot where the commotion was taking place, Sgt. Greg Day and Trp. Matthew Harris witnessed a male subject waving a gun in front of him and then pointing the gun towards a group of people.

Orders were given for the male to drop the gun, but instead he fired one more shot in the direction of a group of people. The suspect then began to run and threw his gun (a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun) under a car. Sgt. Day immediately apprehended the suspect and placed him in custody.

Troopers then began looking for possible victims and witnesses were interviewed.

Officers recovered the handgun, several spent bullet casings, and unfired bullets. Two bullet holes were found in the nearby apartments with one bullet found that had traveled through the exterior wall, across a room, and into an interior wall.
