To help prevent Identity Theft, the Pomona Police Department will be holding a free Community Shred-a-thon, so residents can safely dispose of sensitive documents. Identity Theft affects millions of people each year at a huge cost in losses and added stress. One way thieves are able to steal your identity is by sifting through your trash containers looking for documents that contain personal information such as birth dates, social security numbers, bank/credit card information, bank statements and tax returns. As a general rule, you should shred documents that contain any of the following information:
- Account numbers
- Passwords
- PINs
- Signatures
- Social Security Numbers
- Dates of birth
The shredding is free of charge to all Pomona residents and is being conducted in conjunction with Paper Recycling & Shredding Specialists. Everyone is encouraged to bring in your confidential documents for on-site destruction. The Crime Prevention Unit will be present with Fraud and Identity Theft information.
