Advisory

Petaluma Police advising citizens to be aware of fraudulent calls being recieved by someone claiming to be the U.S. Treasury.

Sent April 21, 2015 at 12:13 PM

This is to advise residents of Petaluma that the Petaluma Police Department since 10:00 AM has recieved over 20 calls from residents who have stated they recived phone calls from someone claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury and if they did not make a payment to the U.S. Treasury criminal charges would be filed against them.

There are two phone calls which have been received. The first was threatening residents that they owed back taxes and if they did not make an immediate payment criminal charges would be filed against them.

The second type of call threatened residents there was a warrant for their arrest and if they did not make an immediate payment they would be arrested.

These are not legitimate calls and are a growing trend in an attempt to fraudulently get money from victims. The IRS and U.S. Treasury do not make phone calls such as these.

If you receive a phone call such as this police advise you to immediately discontinue the call.
