Gunfire During Scuffle Leaves One Person Dead In Downtown Madison

Madison – Gunfire during a scuffle Thursday evening in Downtown Madison has left one person dead.

On Thursday April 16, 2015 evening around 9:00 PM, the Indiana State Police was called to the 400 block of West Vaughn Street to assist Madison Police with a death investigation. Preliminary investigation reveals that during an altercation between several subjects, a gun went off, striking a male subject. That male was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Three other males have been detained for questioning in this investigation. The deceased name is being with-held pending notification of next of kin.

This death investigation is on-going. An update will be completed once more information is obtained. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Indiana State Police Detective Tracy Rolfing or Detective Pete Tressler at the Versailles state police post (812-689-5000).

Madison – (Update) On Thursday evening April 16, 2015 around 9:00 PM, Madison Police Dispatch received a 911 call of possible gunshots in the area of 400 West Vaughn Street in downtown Madison. When Madison Police arrived on the scene they located a male with a gunshot wound to his abdomen area. The male was transported to King’s Daughter Hospital in Madison where he was pronounced dead.

A vehicle containing possible suspects was stopped later on Milton Hill. Three occupants of the vehicle were detained and are being questioned at this time. A joint investigation between Madison Police and the Indiana State and Kentucky State Police agencies have been launched. Members of these agencies are currently following up on leads and interviewing numerous witnesses of this on-going investigation.

The deceased’s name is still being with-held until next of kin has been notified. The occupants of the vehicle that was stopped names are being with-held as well as they are being questioned regarding the incident. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Friday morning.

Other agencies assisting in this investigation include Jefferson County Sheriff Department, Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Madison – (second update) A suspect has been named and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

On Friday evening around 10:00 PM, a warrant authorizing the arrest of Vaughn Alan Whitt 31, of Milton, Kentucky for murder of Brennan Stewart 17, of Brooksburg, Indiana was issued by a Jefferson County Court. Stewart was shot during a scuffle in the 400 Block of West Vaughn Street last night around 9:00 PM and later died at King’s Daughter Hospital in Madison. Whitt is currently being held in the Carrollton County Jail on unrelated charges in Kentucky. Whitt will be held there until he faces a local judge to address extradition.

A copy of the probable cause affidavit will be filed with the Jefferson County, Indiana Clerk Monday morning. This investigation is on-going.
