Semi Crash Closes EB I-94

Porter County-Today at approximately 4:49 a.m. on I-94 EB near the 21 MM (That is just west of the 22 MM/exit) a semi drifts over into the concrete median barrier and crashes closing all of EB I-94 for several hours.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Glen Fifield has revealed that a white 2010 International pulling an intermodal trailer with a container filled with rolls of paper and driven by Anthony M. Bowles, 33 of Radcliff, KY was EB near the 21 MM.  For an unknown reason the semi drifted across the left lane of traffic into the inside emergency lane and crashed into the inside concrete barrier wall.

The semi ran against the barrier wall for about 300 feet before it started to roll onto its side.  The container came loose from the trailer and struck the inside leg of the overhead information sign across the interstate.  This caused the trailer to split in half causing the load to spread across all EB lanes of traffic.  The semi rolled onto its side and came to rest in the right hand lane and shoulder.

The driver was taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Chesterton with very minor injuries.  He was issued two citations for Unsafe Lane Movement and for having a False Log.  Cleanup continues as we have all lanes open EB but still only one lane open WB at this time.

Assisting at the scene was ISP Commercial Motor Vehicle Section and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Picture one is of the container split in half.  Picture two is the other half.  Picture three is the damaged leg of the information sign.  Picture four is the rolled semi tractor.
