Driver Arrested After Crashing His Car

Cambridge City – A Richmond man was arrested this morning after he drove his car over an embankment and into a tree. Witnesses reported seeing the 1998 Buick around 8:45 a.m., just prior to the crash, driving westbound on US 40 erratically in the area of Washington Rd.

As the car approached the area of Hiser Station Rd., it drove across the eastbound lanes and over an embankment coming to rest against a tree. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Trooper Brandon Steffee was nearby and responded to the scene to find the driver uninjured.

However further investigation revealed the driver, Mark E. Laswell, age 47 of Richmond, had been driving while under the influence of a controlled substance. Laswell was lodged in the Wayne County Jail charged with Operating While Intoxicated with Endangerment, Class “A” Misdemeanor, and Operating While Intoxicated Class “C” Misdemeanor.

This incident is a reminder that impaired drivers can be found on our roadways at anytime, day or night. Motorists are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911. Give a vehicle description, location, and direction of travel. Never follow an impaired driver.
