Rear End Crash Causes Car to Burn

Lake County-At approximately 1:19 a.m. today on I-65 NB near the 254.7 MM (that is approximately one half mile south of the 255 MM/exit), a semi tanker was rear ended by a car sending the driver of the car to the hospital and totaling the car.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Nicholas Daly has revealed that a white 2000 Kenworth pulling a tanker trailer driven by Gary A. Corn, 53 of Redkey, IN was NB on I-65 near the 254.7 MM in the far right lane.  A black 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by Charles T. Webb, 36 of Merrillville, IN was purportedly traveling at a high rate of speed and rear ended the tanker trailer.  The Chevrolet then spun to the left causing it to hit the inside concrete barrier and catch fire.

Corn and two other good Samaritans were able to get the driver out of the Chevrolet before it became fully engulfed.  Webb was transported by Prompt Ambulance Service to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with severe injuries to his right hand.  Corn was not injured.  Alcohol or drugs may be a contributing factor in the cause of the crash.  Tests are pending at this time.

The Chevrolet was a total loss.  The semi trailer received damage to the left rear axle.  Seatbelts were used by both drivers which appear to have helped reduce the severity of the injuries.   The investigation is continuing.

First picture is of the burnt Chevrolet and the second picture is the rear of the tanker trailer.

Suspects are innocent until proven Guilty in a court of law.                                                                                                       RILEY
