#LASD Gang Diversion Team & UC Irvine Collaboration Event, Saturday, April 18, 2015

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Gang Diversion Team, in collaboration with the University of California Irvine (UCI), UCI’s School of Social Ecology, Sigma Delta Alpha Fraternity, Carson Station and Century Station personnel, will be hosting an incentive outing for interested youths at the UC Irvine campus on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

LASD’s Gang Diversion Team recruit youths from various socioeconomic backgrounds to understand the importance of continuing their education after high school. This year’s theme is “Pave Your Own Path,” which states our goal of having today’s youth make their own choices - independent of negative influences. At this outing, the youths can take a glimpse of life on a college campus. The youths can look forward to a tour of the campus with current UCI students and hear motivational speeches by various members of faculty and law enforcement, including UCI Alumni and LASD Commander Eddie Rivero. The youths will also experience “Celebrate UCI,” which is a campus-wide event featuring live entertainment, interactive student run booths, and academic information.  LASD’s Gang Diversion Team hopes that youths will be motivated not only to finish high school but take their education to the next level.

The Gang Diversion Team is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and positive community organizations that provide innovative plans in order to reduce interest in the gang lifestyle. The target population is at-risk youth and gang affiliated individuals of all ages residing in the Carson and Lynwood area. This is an innovative program in which the community serves as the setting for services tailored to high-risk youths. The primary goal of the team is to get the youth involved in various services from community based organizations that best meet their needs. The Gang Diversion Team in collaboration with UC Irvine is hosting the third annual event.
