On Monday, April 13, 2015, the County of Santa Clara will begin Phase I of the Loyola Bridge Widening Project. Concrete barriers will be placed on the expressway, closing the innermost lanes in both directions of travel. While Foothill lane closures are in effect, commuters may want to adjust their schedules, since county engineers estimate peak period traffic could be delayed 10 minutes or more.

This project will provide for the widening of Loyola Bridge at Foothill Expressway by 23’ on the north side and 15’ on the south side. The wider bridge will allow for a fourth vehicle lane, ADA-compliant sidewalks and a bike lane on each shoulder. With four vehicle lanes, the bridge will have one through lane going in each direction, as well as one dedicated turn lane in each direction.

Work to be complete as part of this project consists of excavation for the foundation in the expressway median, building the bridge foundations and columns, partial removal of retaining walls and replacement with abutment structures, erection of precast pre-stressed concrete slabs, and replacing the barrier railings.
