Fatal Crash In Mason Township

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood J.R. reports that his deputies responded to a single vehicle fatal crash in Mason Township.

Wayne Roscoe Owen, a 72-year-old Cassopolis resident, was northbound on Cassopolis Rd near Starbrick when he drove off the road and struck a large tree. According to Owens's family, he had a history of heart related illness. A witness who had observed the crash told deputies that he saw Owen drive off the roadway into a farm field on the east side of the road. Owen continued driving and returned to the roadway momentarily before crossing the oncoming lane and striking a large tree on the west side of the road. Owen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Owen was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this accident.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Edwardsburg Ambulance Service and the Porter Township Fire Department.

This incident remains under investigation.
